The Waiting is the Hardest Part

We're finally to mid-February. Only another 56 days until the first sprint car race of the 2007 season here in Nebraska. Man...56 freakin' days! I think I can make it. At least I hope I can. When you're as pathetically addicted to the sport like I am, this cold turkey wait is a long time coming. Granted, I've had it better than some. I've been lucky enough to see two nights of the Chili Bowl, which could be racing's equivalent of a speed ball. In addition to that was last week's trip to Phoenix for the Copper on Dirt. Seeing all those wingless cars pitch it sideways on the Manzanita clay was a thing of beauty and a nice fix to this race junkie.

In the aftermath of Manzy however I have to wait. Just 56 more days. Lord help me if that first event on April 13 rains out. Sure, there's racing on TV. The Indy Racing League kicks off March 24th. I'm a huge fan of the Indy Car Series. And I know what some of you are thinking, the Daytona 500 is this Sunday. Yes, I'll probably watch it. I can use a good nap. Hell, I could even go watch some modified races here in Nebraska coming up in March. I could do that. I'm just too much of an open wheel addict to follow fenders.

So that leaves me waiting until April 13 and the ASCS 360 sprint car show on the dirt at I-80 Speedway. If I remember right, there were nearly 60 sprinters in the pits for that show in 2006. I'm hoping this year's event will draw as many if not more. It's a great feeling, sitting at the first race of the season, knowing that you have an entire summer of racing ahead of you. This season I'm looking to up my game with an internship. I'm hoping that an internship in motorsports will help me learn the business and see some great racing at the same time. It would help feed my addiction. It might even give me an excuse to spend a summer in traveling around to races, or live in Indianapolis or Knoxville. I hear racing is sort of a big deal in those places.

Normally at this point of the winter I have my whole summer season planned out. This year I can't really do that. I don't know if I'll be on an internship or not. It's a tough wait! I'd like to think that I'll get something but you never can tell. So here I sit. February 16th, 56 days out, waiting for the season to start. Waiting to hear back from any of the places I've applied to. For a fiend like me, the waiting is the hardest part.
