Here today, gone tomorrow.

Well not quite. Just as I'm getting back in the swing of things, I'm going to pack up and head out on another race weekend. First though I'll catch the sprints tomorrow night at the Butler County Motorplex near Rising City. Of course the weather isn't looking too promising. I won't use the "R" word but last report I checked out said there was an 80% chance of that happening tomorrow. Hope they're wrong, I'd like to see some sprints!

After the Rising City show I'm hitting the road early Saturday with my dad. We have to deliver a vehicle in Madison, Wisconsin on Saturday. As luck would have it, that's just a day before the IRL race at the Milwaukee Mile in West Alis. The Indy cars move to their traditional Milwaukee date after the '500' so we'll be trackside for that one. I'm just crazy about Indy car racing.

Here today, gone tomorrow. That's just the life of a wannabe BTAR.

My Take...

-There was a lot of action in there area last week. Friday night Junction Motor Speedway ran a joint bill of ASCS sprints and POWRi midgets. I was disappointed to hear about the low midget car count. Credit must be given to Delmer and crew at JMS to schedule open wheel events, but the teams have to come through! There was a good sprint turn out, but I hope the POWRi feels bad for their lack of teams.

-Don Droud Jr. currently sits atop ASCS Midwest point standings. Fellow Nebraskan Stu Snyder is leading the ASCS Rocky Mountain points. I hope to see both of them compete tomorrow night at BCM.

-It's hard to imagine that we're only a couple weeks away from the World of Outlaws' one night stand at Eagle. I hope there's a good turnout for that one. The Outlaws have been a strong series this year, and usually put on a fantastic show at Eagle.

-I'm sort of pissed that the Back Row Challenge features WDRL Late Models. If you like the late models, that's fine. I don't. At least if they run the sprints first I'll be out of there early. I know, I'm just another bitchy sprint car fan.

-Track prep, track prep, track prep! That's always a hot topic on the message boards these days. It seems like once Roger and the crew fixes one problem with the surface, another one appears. Now there's talk of a rut problem. Skinny tires will do that to a surface. I'm sure they're searching for a solution to the problem that makes everyone involved happy.

-Nick Bryan showed a lot of toughness running Eagle on Saturday after his appendectomy. Lord knows I could never muster enough toughness to do that.

-Eagle will attempt to get their first non-wing show of the season in on Saturday. I still don't know how it will turn out. I hope they get a nice field of cars, but with Eagle's regular Saturday program, and ASCS, I'm afraid the local pool of teams is being spread too thin.

-It's a nice gesture on the Eagle's part to offer free pit admittance to driver's with a perfect attendance record in 2007. That's fitting for Student Break-out Night.

-It figures that the first two Oval Operators to pick up wins this season do it on a weekend when I'm out of town. Jay Russell and Trish Dover were both victorious on Saturday night. Hopefully there will be many more wins to come for them, and the rest of the Oval Operators.

-After going to my second Indy 500, I'm still convinced that it's the greatest race event in the world. It's probably not as big as it used to be, but it's still the Brickyard in the month of May. If you've never been, go. It's worth it.

-Of course if you were to ask me during the Knoxville Nationals what my favorite event is, I may change my mind. Luckily, I don't have to choose.

-The Night Before the 500 midget race at Indianapolis Raceway Park was dominated by Kevin Swindell. He led all 50 laps and drove a flawless race. I can hardly wait until he goes NASCAR. Yuck.

-I did take some sick pleasure in watching one of Steve Lewis' Toyotas blow up in the closing laps while battling with Billy Wease and his Esslinger Ford.

-Bobby East and Stephanie Mockler looked great in the midget feature as well. Both came from the back, with Bobby placing fourth and Stephanie seventh. Those Beast Fords sure can fly.

-The midget show seems to take a back seat to the freakish Little 500 sprint car race in Anderson, IN. Watching a 500 lap sprint car race is sort of an oxymoron if you ask me. It seems to be a big deal with the locals. I understand is a big race, but given the choice I'll choose midgets every time. 500 laps in a sprinter isn't a race, it's an enduro.

And Finally...

-To my delight I just got word today that I'll be working at Knoxville for NOS Energy Drinks during the Outlaw and USAC dates in June.

-I'm currently reading Chris Economaki's book "Let 'Em All Go!" It's a great read so far and I'd highly recommend it to anyone who loves racing.
