Hines hurt

-From the Indianapolis Star

For those who might have missed it on The Star's home page, Tracy Hines was seriously injured in a dirt bike accident Monday near his home in New Castle, Ind.

Many of the details still aren't known, but Hines apparently lost control of the bike and struck a wood fence, fracturing his leg, knee and pelvis (at least). He was flown to Methodist Hospital where he underwent surgery Monday night. The hospital is not issuing a condition report at this time, but it does not appear that his injuries are life-threatening.

Hines, a two-time USAC champion, is a popular driver who many hoped to see compete in this year's Indianapolis 500 as he drives A.J. Foyt's Silver Crown car (he's the points leader after winning the March 23 race in Homestead, Fla.). That wasn't going to happen, but Foyt certainly likes the driver who has pursued NASCAR Busch and Craftsman Truck Series opportunities in recent years.

Today is Hines' 35th birthday.
