Coming Home
For the first time since the Outlaw show in June, I was able to see the races at Eagle. Saturday night was a great night for racing here in Nebraska. We were treated to cooler temps and a nice breeze making it very nice to be outdoors.
My fiancée Erin and I had a very nice time relaxing and watching the ASCS show. It was her first time out to Eagle in a while, so we were both due.
My Take...
-Mike Boston had as good a night as I've seen anyone have this season. He won his heat, won the dash, started on the pole of the feature, and of course won that. While he ran away with the show, there was still some good racing in the pack.
-I must give credit where credit is due. The best race of the evening was the modified A feature. George Haney looked like he was going to steal one from points leader Chris Alcorn. However Alcorn was able to take advantage of a small mistake by Haney in the closing laps and get the win. I believe it was Alcorn's eighth feature victory of the season.
-Jeff Lowery and Jay Russell both had great runs, finishing second and third respectively.
-Lee Grosz turned a bad night into a good one. During the start of the A feature, Grosz spun in turn one bringing out the caution and forcing him to re-start in the back. He then avoided numerous cautions to fight his way back to a fifth place finish. I'm sure starting on the outside front row he wanted more, but considering what happened, fifth was a great run.
-The track looked to be pretty smooth and took a lot of rubber. The cars were able to race on the top and the bottom, the cushion was nearly to the wall, and the crowd didn't have to eat any dust.
-The officials did a nice job of moving the show along and getting everyone out of there at a decent hour. ASCS did offer an apology over the PA after the show for difficulties in lining up the sprints after one of the caution periods.
-I like the "roaming reporter" idea at tracks as long as their wireless mic works.
-I did my part in making sure Eagle's beer sales were successful on Saturday. I forgot how good ice cold beer tastes when you're watching sprint cars.-All in all it was an entertaining night of racing and great to be back home.
-It was also reported that Mike Cacak is start to reover from injures he suffered a few weeks back. It'll be a long recovery but good to hear he's getting better.
In other news...
-I had wanted to attend the ASCS show in Denison, Iowa on Friday, but opted to stay home and spend a nice evening at home with Erin. I wasn't shocked when I got up Saturday morning and read that Brian Brown won.
-I was happy to see Jack Dover's second place run.
-It figures that the night I stay home from Knoxville, my friends on the Lovegrove team would make their debut there with driver Larry Pinegar II. I think they have to feel pretty good about their equipment going into the Nationals events in August. Driving in the 410 class, Larry timed in ninth quick, finished fourth in the heat, started on the pole of the A and finished seventh.
I'm sure Larry would have liked to have finished higher after leading the first ten laps, but considering the competition that's a very strong night
Jack Dover's rotten luck continued at Knoxville on Saturday. After timing in third, Dover suffered a shredded tire in his heat race. The resulting damage to the suspension effectively ended his night. That kid is due for some good luck and a good run.
-Ryan Roberts had a great night, finishing second in the 360 feature.-Brooke Tatnell was the 410 winner, while Matt Moro won in the 360s.
-Yesterday the IRL ran their show at the Mid Ohio Sports Car Course. Are you ready for this? Originally the telecast was scheduled to start on ABC. This wasn't possible as they had to show the golf playoff at the British Open (gag).
So, they started the telecast on ESPN and ran half way on that channel. Then, when the golf playoff was over, they switched BACK to ABC. What replaced the IRL race on ESPN? The CART race from Edmonton I wonder if anyone noticed.
With his win Sunday, Scott Dixon became just the third driver in IRL history to win three consecutive races.
