COMMENTARY-JMS Night #1
In my first trip back to Junction Motor Speedway since June, we were treated to a dry track, but a very good POWRi midget feature.
My Take...
-Chad Boat started on the pole, but was eventually overtaken by Dave Darland. Soon, Kevin Swindell raced his way into second to challenge Darland. The two had a fierce battle for the lead through lapped traffic.
Eventually, Swindell overtook Darland and drove to victory. Swindell's pass for the lead was aggressive, but both he and Darland avoided any contact and finished first and second.
Chad Boat finished third, Brad Kuhn fourth, and Davy Ray rounded out the top five.
-Aaron Allgood once again proved his field handicapping prowess, picking Swindell as his feature event winner. Admittedly, had I chosen a car, it would have been Jerry Coons Jr. in the Wilke Pak entry. Coons was never a factor in the race for first, and eventually dropped out of the feature.
-Toyota powered cars finished 1-2. Yuck!
-Despite not being a USAC sanctioned show, the Lewis 9 team ran two cars. It's rare for them to run non-USAC events.
It was a night of mixed results for the nines. Darland did finish second, but teammate Kody Swanson had to transfer from the B, and was taken out on the first lap of the A feature, finishing 25th.
-Bobby East's night ended in disappointment. Starting 14th in the feature, East worked his Klatt entry into the top ten, and was looking to break into the top five when engine problems sidelined him.
-The track was hard and took a lot of rubber, but the racing was good throughout the feature. There were two grooves and lots of slide jobs. It was a little dusty, but the excitement of the feature more than made up for it.
And Finally...
Tuesday's great racing has me ready to return this evening and see if Swindell can complete the sweep. Hopefully the Klatt team can solve their engine troubles and give those Toyota's some headaches.
