We're finally there!
Sprint car season has come to Nebraska. It was a long, cold off-season. Although temps last night were still on the brisk side. It wasn't the best night of racing I've seen. Too many guys ended their night hooked to the tow-truck for my taste.
My take...
-With over 50 ASCS 360's in the pits there was a great field top to bottom. Hopefully the NCRA will bring a few more good cars tonight as well.
-It was a rugged start to the A-main. Taking the intial green flag Jake Peters got together with Ricky Montgomery, with Peters taking the brunt of the crash. It was one of the more wild flips that I've seen, with the front end of Peters' car being completely torn off. Luckily he escaped un-injured.
-On the restart of the A feature, Chad Humston and Gregg Bakker collided. Humston was removed from the car on a backboard, but reported to be OK. I hope this isn't the last time that we see Humston in a sprinter. He was running a very limited sprint schedule this year. With a torn up car I'm not sure if he'll make it back. He's always a fast racer and very entertaining to watch.
-It was a tough night for Team Dover. First, Trish flipped in her 305 heat. She wasn't hurt, and the car didn't look bad, but she was done for the night. Then her brother Jack was passed on the last lap of one of the B mains by Rick Ideus, and missed a trip to the feature. I'm sure that isn't the start they wanted this year, but I'm sure they'll bounce back.
-The bad luck continued with Matt Stelzer. He looked to be the fastest of the 305 class and dominated the feature until a spin with three laps to go relegated him to settling for a third place finish. I'm sure he was upset but shouldn't be too hard on himself. New car, new motor, first race of the year and he was looking good. I'm sure he'll visit victory lane this year.
-Getting back to the 360's, it was good seeing Mike Boston running an ASCS event. He looked good winning his heat and started on the front row of the feature. He did fade somewhat but still came home with a top ten finish.
-Don Droud Jr. quietly put together a good night, finishing fifth in the A. I wasn't familier with the car he was in, but he gave it a good run.
-I thought I-80 did a great job running the show last night. They moved it right along which I was appreciative of. It wasn't getting any warmer out there and I of course was underdressed.
-I thought the track was a little too dry and ended up wearing some of it home last night. However it's had a long winter of abuse from the elements so I'm sure it'll be in better shape as the season progresses.
-Brian Brown is really freakin' good. I don't remember too many ASCS races around here that he hasn't won.
And Finally...
Tonight should be a great night of racing. With warmer temps, and the added cars of the NCRA. I'm hoping to take a few photos and perhaps hand out some more decals. I hope that they don't prove to be a curse! Seems like everyone who had one on their car didn't have a great night. However, today is a new day and time for a new race. Racing season is here and I couldn't be happier.
